One Thing at a Time

Follow your baby’s lead. If your baby is showing invitation cues, let her look at your face or hear your voice. Introduce only one thing at a time. Speaking into a baby’s face is instinctive for most of us, but it makes the baby look and listen. Speak to your baby first, and then watch for the reaction. When your baby hears your voice, her eyes may brighten and she may turn her head to find you. At that point, she is ready to see your face. If your baby is very preterm or ill, she may not tolerate seeing a face and hearing a voice or hearing your voice and being touched at the same time. She may quickly show signs of stress. As she stabilizes medically and grows, she will gradually learn to handle more interaction.
